Curious: an introduction to Gloriously Ordinary Language

Are you working in or with an organisation where most of the language people use isn’t what you would use in the kitchen with your family, or in the café or pub with your mates?

Do you feel, like we do, that this is not OK?

Curious: an introduction to Gloriously Ordinary Language, is a full day session for organisations who are curious and want to know more about Gloriously Ordinary Language and what it’s all about.

Our day together will get everyone thinking about why language matters to all of us.

By the end of the day, you will have gained practical insight into what our language reveals and shapes about the way we think, feel and act, and understand how paying attention to the words we choose to use can radically change the way we work together.

How the day works

This session can be held online via Zoom or in person at your venue, for approximately 50 people working in or with your organisation.

The day will run from 9:30am to 4pm with plenty of breaks.

It will be practical and interactive and will include a mix of working together as a whole group and in small groups/breakouts.

We will cover:

  • Why language matters to all of us

  • Why ordinary – and not just simple or plain language

  • Reimagining the purpose of social care – from crisis to opportunity, and from getting a service to living Gloriously Ordinary Lives

  • Rehumanising our language – remembering we are all human and moving beyond blame

  • Reconnecting with what matters – stepping out of the social care sorting office

  • So what – how can we challenge and change language and practice?

After the day, your organisation will have access to a password protected section of this website with a range of resources for you to use to support Gloriously Ordinary Language.

By the end of the day you will:

Really feel and appreciate the impact and power of language on all our lives

Have a very different understanding of what it means to be professional and to use professional language

Understand Test Two for Gloriously Ordinary Lives and have some practical ideas for using and sharing it in your organisation

Know that you don’t need to produce a glossary or language guide!

Have some clear first steps for making your language and practice real, inclusive and human.
